What to Look For in a Motorhome Insurance Quote

There are several features of motor insurance which are common to a campervan or motorhome insurance policy which you should be aware of when comparing cover:
Replacement vehicles
Most people using a campervan or motorhome will be further away from home when driving than the average car driver who makes more local journeys. This means the consequences of being without a vehicle are more serious as you are less likely to have friend or family within range to pick you up. If you are traveling with a large family, it may also be difficult to find somebody with a car big enough to drive you home after a crash.
Overnight accommodation
Unless your policy guarantees quick delivery of a replacement motorhome or campervan, rather than simply a "replacement vehicle", you will need to find somewhere to stay which can be expensive, particularly in holiday seasons. It may also be worth having the option of overnight accommodation in case you suffer a crash and either you or your family are (understandably) not keen on immediately jumping back into another campervan.
Discounts
Some insurers offer discounts on premiums for drivers who have passed a special advanced driving course for motorhomes. One such course is offered by the Caravan Club.
Contents cover
When travelling in a motorhome or campervan, you will often be carrying more personal belongings than when in a car. Make sure that this is reflected in your cover, both in the fact that it covers belongings and in the total amount covered. It's worth looking at theft cover as well as cover for damage.
Rentals and waivers
When hiring a motor home or campervan, you will usually be covered by insurance as part of your rental. In virtually every case you will be required to pay the excess on a claim, which can run into several hundreds of pounds. You may also be offered the option of reducing this excess in return for a higher daily fee, an option sometimes called loss damage waiver.
When considering this option, the most logical approach is to look at the figures. Divide the added cost of the option (across the entire rental period) by the amount by which you will reduce the excess. This will give you a percentage figure. If you believe the chances of being involved in a crash in which you are held partially or fully responsible are higher than this percentage, then statistically the option is worth taking. Of course, this assessment doesn't take account of psychology: you will also need to decide whether the cost of the option is worthwhile in terms of peace of mind.
There are some specific issues to campervans when assessing this option. The most important is that a campervan is made up of much larger parts than the average car, particularly side panels. This means that even a minor prang can work out so expensive to repair that the cost will use up the entire excess.
You should also carefully check the terms of both your rental and the excess reduction option. There may be conditions which mean that you are held responsible for some costs regardless of the size of the excess.
